Advancing Knowledge and Inquiry

As faculty research extends into global domains in the pursuit of wisdom, truth, and progress, Notre Dame International (NDI) offers support for those interested in teaching, research, or service learning opportunities abroad.

Through the global network of Gateways and Centers, strategic partnerships, and logistical knowledge, NDI assists faculty with academic events; facilitates communication with libraries, archives, and special collections; and provides funding through a number of grants for faculty-led initiatives.

Notre Dame’s faculty Fulbright U.S. Scholars advance research and collaborations

Within the prestigious and multi-faceted Fulbright Programs, Notre Dame International encourages applications by faculty and liaises with the program on their behalf.

“Given NDI’s commitment to sparking and fostering international engagement by the faculty, situating the role of faculty liaison for the Fulbright within our office makes sense strategically,” explains Geraldine Meehan, director of faculty engagement for NDI. “The connections an individual scholar makes during a Fulbright term advance the opportunities available internationally for so many other Notre Dame faculty and students.”

Exploring Social Capital: Notre Dame's Multidisciplinary and Global Seminar in London

Social Capital

During the summer of 2023, Notre Dame’s London Global Gateway played host to the Social Capital and the City: a Notre Dame Research Seminar. Developed by Notre Dame International and led by University of Notre Dame political scientist Jaimie Bleck, this interdisciplinary seminar explored the complex interplay of social capital in urban environments. The seminar, which took place from July 16 to July 29, brought together 15 scholars from Notre Dame and around the world, fostering collaboration across departments and schools, as well as countries and cultures.

Against the backdrop of London's rich cultural tapestry and urban complexities, participants addressed how political landscapes, agriculture, public security and access to water can influence social capital, and its impact on various aspects of urban life, including public health and religious life. Collaboration is ongoing among the researchers and some have received invitations to speak at each other's universities, impacting future research endeavors.

“Silence is really appealing to me, and loss is what feeds narrative,” she remarks. “The people who aren’t able to talk are the ones who are hurting the most. That’s why short stories stay short.”

Declan Kiberd, Donald and Marilyn Keough Professor of Irish Studies and professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, spoke with author Claire Keegan, an award winning writer of short stories and novellas, about her life and writing at O’Connell House on March 23, 2023.
